Today I Have Been Mostly Pinning and…

Quilting. I am waiting for the metal hardware for some bags that are in the process of being made. So I thought I would pull out my quilt top, make ready the sandwich and start quilting. I’ve put this bit of it off as I must admit that I’m still a little scared of this part of making a quilt. The quilt top itself is fun, but this bit seems the ‘hard work side’.

With my little helper, my mum’s lesson last summer and a good youtube video we pinned the quilt sandwich together on the table.

Then I started quilting…this is the biggest quilt made to date, it certainly takes time.

It was going well,

Until I ran out of thread on my bobbin – I wound some more on and started again – something wasn’t quite right but I continued merrily not thinking too much of it…

But when I turned over the quilt I saw this

Grrr, A big mess of thread – so that’s where I stopped.

Tomorrow is another day and I’ll be back on it with fresh hands, arms and eyes:)

Book and Blog for Inspiration

I have been thinking hard on how to quilt my newest and was taken by using a spiral design. I’m not that confident yet, but here is a fantastic tutorial on how to do this on The Quilting Edge. I think the suggestion of doing spirals on baby quilts and quilt as you go projects is a good one as larger quilts will just get very cumbersome on the turns.

My Mum gave me this book last summer. I took it off the shelf the other day and loved looking through it with my daughter – inspiration was needed for colour alone, but it’s filled with loads of different images perfect to spark lots of ideas off.

Blue Polka in Oilcloth

School half terms don’t present a great deal of opportunity to sew but I managed to fit in a few hours yesterday.

Every so often a short project is very satisfying. Being able to make something from start to finish in the same sitting lovely. I had forgotten that I used to wear a similar style bag all the time – space for your essentials alone and you have your hands free.

Perfect!

Ever thought of Quilting?

I have become slightly enthralled with quilting! I love each bit of the journey that patchwork and quilting takes me on. From choosing the colours, feeling the textures and slowly creating something beautiful. It’s becoming my outlet, the place where I can escape to without having to think about all those daily little things – it’s addictive but it keeps me sane.

With this desire to learn more I’ve been gathering a wealth of knowledge through other peoples creative blogs. Before actually taking the plunge into quilting I was absolutely sure that it was going to be too difficult to be successful in … but now that I am trying, even though I’m struggling through bits of it I am loving the process.

This interview on ‘terificreations blog’ with Rayna Gillman and Rayna’s blog gave me a bit more strength in my convictions that quilting doesn’t have to be perfect – there are many different ways to make a quilt. And her attitude is relaxed and perhaps allows you, especially being a newby, to stop worrying about all the rules that seem to surround this textile art. She also has a book out which looks brilliant…

Perhaps a good one to add to the library?

Patchwork Backpack on it’s way

I made a tiny sketch of how I wanted to piece the fabric for the backpack I’m making.

I took the fabric and started cutting. The initial stages of a project are such fun, working with different colours and patterns makes me smile.

At the beginning of the afternoon I had these three pieces on my cutting table…

With the boys off watching football and one tiny one asleep I had space and quiet – I do love a bit of that. As the sun faded – I made this and had completely lost track of time.

I will continue adding until I have a piece large enough to make the bag.

New Patchwork Rucksack in the Making

I am really excited about a new project. A friend of a friend has recently bought herself a beautiful new desigual coat. Her birthday is coming up too, so M thought it a good idea to ask me to make H a new bag to go with the coat. M came round and I got bag after bag of my fabric out – I didn’t realise how much of it I have

M rummaged through the bags and got out all the colours and patterned fabrics she liked. I talked through a few ideas. I’m so looking forward to making it. It will have to be a patchwork bag as the upholstery fabric is in quite small pieces. The colours of the fabric are so gorgeous, it’s going to be fun.

I also had the doorbell ring this morning – the delivery of one new roll of batting has arrived so I can finish off my quilt.

We enjoy the school’s half term this week coming and a break in the school routine is welcomed.

Another Curved Piecing Method – for ‘The Drunkards Path’ in Quilts

Thanks to my mum (thanks MOM) who passed me on Sharon Schamber’s name – before now I had no idea about this talented quilter. I’ve just checked out some of her work which she has on her website - WOW!! Fabulous quilts.

Sharon Schamber also has a free section on her website where one of the things she talks of is the ‘piec-lique circle’ method she developed for curved piecing. It’s very interesting, she uses freezer paper, spray on starch and glue before sewing and then cutting the circle into four quarters. Worth a try – this method is used then to make four drunkards path blocks.
