Book Review – Pattern Orla Kiely

9 Dec

Her bags are everywhere and her designs fabulous, I am in awe of Orla Keily.  What makes her designs so good is her ability to use colour and simplicity to perfection.

This is a great hard cover book which amazon is selling.  Orla Kiely sets out her life story talking concisely about how she, from a very early age got interested in fashion and design.  The book is divided into six chapters.  The first beginning with her life events leading up to and continuing into the now worldwide success she has in fashion and design.  I enjoy the way she has written about herself, it feels like you are sitting in the same room as her listening intently.  I was specifically interested how her and her partner started up their business in the mid to late 90’s, and how things began to happen for them with a few hints at how tough it can be to run your own business successfully.

The second chapter talks you through where she gets her inspiration from, sharing some of the ways she uses to help her.  Books being her first.  She also talks of collecting ideas and photographs as well as sketches and notes that she keeps together in a scrapbook, or perhaps scrapbooks at this point in her carreer.

Colour comes as the next chapter – it explores the idea of how important colour is in our world.  She explains how she uses colour in the design and fashion industry.  She writes in-depth of the colour wheel, colour combinations and the actual ‘science’ of colour.  Indeed very interesting.

Chapter 4 is called ‘print’.  Here Orla Kiely describes how she understands pattern and how it can be used successfully. She herself having been able to create prints which people find very appealing.  It is interesting to note how she has made a conscious effort to continue to expand her ideas on her popular patterns, keeping the same base to work from.  It is in this chapter that she shares a multitude of prints she has created.  She is very clever!

In the following chapter she mentions some of the collections she has done and also how accessories, in particular bags, can make a statement.  Orla Kiely also shows off a wide variety of the bags and bag styles she has created.  Now I am in heaven…

The final chapter is how her designs are now used in the home.  An amazing story about one designer.  Lovely photos and an interesting read.  One for the shelf of inspiration.

Wow, what a clever woman, a true inspiration.
