Being so new to quilting I am not sure what batting/wadding is good for a bed quilt. I have no long arm and do the quilting on my trusty domestic Bernina so the batting can not be thick.
I also didn’t realize just how slippery a quilt is – when quilting for the first time I almost had to hold the quilt sandwich a little to feed through my machine, do you use gloves? Is it a revelation, what gloves are good?
For my first quilt I used 100% polyester batting, for the one in the making now I have ordered a 70%cotton 30%polyester batting. Does anyone have a preference of batting and gloves that they would like to share? If so please leave comment below.
Thanks for popping by,

I’ve used gloves (quilting gloves that have rubber fingertips)and also a gripper ring..Quilt skipper has loads of information on her site for machine quilting. I have a longarm now. But I use 80*20 cotton or 100 % cotton. I have used poly for baby quilts and like the spring in it. It’s a personal perference thing. I like my batting to shrink.. so it looks aged after washing..
thanks for the info, I’m off to check out ‘quilt skipper’ right now…
I’ve never used gloves, I’d not come across them until fairly recently…I don’t think any of my quilts have suffered as a result!
The most recent batting I bought was Sew Simple Super Soft 100% cotton and it worked great. I don’t like polyester batting, I’ve used it but found that after a while it seems to work through the fabric and you end up with little bobbles on the surface.
Hope that helps!
Thank you, very helpful. Especially the info about the polyester coming through the cotton. Hmm, not a good look at all.
